St Albans vs. Reading as London commuter town
Main Post:
I have been thinking about renting in either St Albans or Reading instead of Lodon, as I'll be working from home (at least until July 2021), and these towns are in reasonable commute time in case I need to get back into the office in the second half of 2021.
Would anyone here care to recommend which town to live? I don't particularly care for restaurants/bars/etc., I'm mainly looking for a place which has decent access to nature, has decent infrastructure and prices not as steep as in London.
I'm looking for an unfurnished 2bd flat with a small garden. From what I have researched, it seems like Reading would be a little bit cheaper to rent, so I would like to know what advantages I would have in St. Albans to offset that.
From what I gathered, St. Albans seems to be very pretty and full of history, which is appealing to me, but I don't know much about Reading.
I don't plan to own a car in the foreseable future.
Any input is highly appreciated!
Edit: A lot of good information was presented on this thread, and while I'm still not 100% decided on where I will live next, I have a lot of different options to pick from. It seems like St Albans may be a good option if I can find a good deal, otherwise a few of other small towns may be a better pick. Cheers!
Top Comment: Will depend where in london you work? The traifins terminate at different stations. Eg if you work in the City, better St Albans. If you work in near Marble Arch, then Reading. That 20-30 minutes save on commute each way adds up.

Yes, what a hell. Wedged between convenient subway access, the Rosedale valley park, and a 5-minute walk from one of the most posh/expensive neighbourhoods in Canada.
I have to admit it's bland, but it's clean. And low-crime. And surrounded by a pretty great city. And all of these apartments, even if un-renovated and crappy, have parking spots if you're willing to pay for them, unlike many older and newer buildings. Not that you even need a car there.

Anyone has experience at 253 Albert St? Going to sign but concerned about the poor reviews from Google Maps

I've lived in one of the two-bedroom units for a year now, and will be living there for another year. I have almost no complaints about the place.
some pros:
The air conditioning is independent and per-unit, your individual aircon is able to pump cold air into your suite as long as the ambient temperature outside is greater than 12 degrees, so you're not dependent on the building's switch-over periods for heating and cooling
A more modern unit (these were recently built afaik) so it has some nice features like an air exchanger
No bugs or silverfish issues and etc
Management is always good, although we have private non-student-housing management
Very well soundproofed between units and between rooms
Washer/dryer in-suite
HUGE living room, huge rooms, a bathroom per person
The only cons IMO:
Elevator takes 3 minutes (no cap) to go up 3 flights of stairs, that shit sucks
There is no "lobby" area, so you need to go downstairs to get Amazon packages or else it will likely be stolen if the driver leaves it somewhere outside.
New Town St. Charles
Main Post:
What’s going on with New Town? Just went out there for a wedding shower and it seemed very...odd.
Top Comment: It's basically the set of the Truman Show, but in St. Charles. It's like a movie director's faint idea of what a "town" is

Has anyone heard about the new town created near Baton Rouge? Why was the involvement of Supreme Court necessary?
Main Post:
So my brother sent me an article about the creation of a new town just outside of Baton Rouge called St. George. The article was from fox news which I know is controversial for some people but I can link it if anyone is interested. The article mentioned that the legal case for creating the town went all the way to the Supreme Court. But why would it be necessary to go to the Supreme Court just to create a town ? Has anyone else read or heard about and have any explanations or thoughts ?
Top Comment: In a nutshell.... After the 2nd attempt to create a new city, the mayor-president and a metro council member sued saying the St George organizers misled the public and didn’t have an adequate financial plan for a new city and that its incorporation would have long-term negative effects for the parish as a whole. The lower court agreed. The St George organizers filed an appeal. The appeals court agreed with the lower court’s ruling. The St George organizers got the LA supreme court to hear the case. They reversed the lower court’s decision.

My in-laws are coming to town and was thinking of going for the day. We are late 30’s with a 2 year old and they are mid 60’s. Thoughts? What’s it like?
